Gerina was a golfer in her first game at the age of fifteen. Gerina graduated from Goddard High School. She was the winner of New Mexico's state golf championship. In addition, she was a volleyball player at the national level. At the age of 2003, she began her studies at the University of Texas. As a senior, she won each tournament that was entered. While in her undergrad year, she received as the conference's best player of year, as well as UTEP's Female Athletic Champion of the Year.
